Our customer was looking for a solution for horizontal and rectangular cuts of hardened plastic out of vertical pipes. This was required when changing material and batches for manufacturing plastics. In the particular situation only a small gap of approximately 10 mm between two flange halves was available. A corresponding machine, a suitable clamp device and an appropriate saw blade was required.
As an individual solution, we used a Pneumatic Reciprocating Saw with ATEX approval for explosion protected areas, a clamp with bow guide and a specially designed saw blade with 2-3 teeth per inch. The saw blade is ideal for this application, as it is carbide tipped and thus inherently stable, robust and resistant. The minimal thickness of 1.6 mm ensures low material abrasion and quick working. Furthermore the modulus of resistance was optimized by adjusting the saw blade cross section. The coarse tooth pitch of 2-3 teeth per inch avoids that the working material clogs the tooth pitches of the saw blade and ensures material removal. By additional cooling ( water or air) the cutting temperature is reduced and thus, the friction and clogging as well.
